ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the impact of library catalogue in enhancing accessibility in the library with special reference to Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta, Ogun State. Specifically, the study aimed to identify the relationship between library catalogue and resources accessibility in the library, determine the extent of use of the catalogue to locate and retrieve books in the library, examine the impacts of library catalogue in enhancing accessibility in the library, discover problems and constraints militating against the use of the catalogue, discover why students preferred to search for materials directly in the shelves and discover ways to make the use of the catalogue easier for students. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 30 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed there is a significant relationship between library catalogue and resources accessibility in the library. The findings also revealed the extent to which catalogue is used in locating and retrieving books in the library is high. The study further revealed the impacts of library catalogue in enhancing accessibility in the library is to create opportunities for learning, support literacy and education, help shape the new ideas and perspectives and the printed form can be easily scanned and detail of book can be fetched. More so, the study revealed the problems and constraints militating against the use of the catalogue is insufficient power supply, poor funding, poor administrative support and inadequate staff training. In addition the study revealed students prefer not to search for materials directly in the shelves because lack of awareness, perceived lack of relevance, lack of time and lack of skills in the use of electronic resources. Lastly, the study revealed the ways of making the use of the catalogue easier for students is through provide user-friendly full text search functionalities, Provides a list and direct access to reference materials, Provides clear information on the policies and procedures for accessing the data and get a barcode scanner, handheld or app. The study thereby recommend that there should be constant awareness programme in university libraries which should be organized to inform undergraduate students of the information retrieval tools, not just the catalogue but all the information, retrieval tools available in academic libraries. Also, use of library should be embedded in the curriculum, so that undergraduate would be conversant with the various information retrieval tools and equally make use of them.
